Over
200 students in 10 classes met
Monday through Friday from June 1 to July 1
to learn to play bridge.
Using
a combination of both Easybridge! and Learn
to Play Bridge in 13 lessons, the kids were eager
and anxious to come to class each day. Mentor
Luke Lucas said, "They took to it very well.
They saw the trophies donated by Unit 143 on display
in their class rooms. The stimulation to do
better in their play and win points and trophies was
fantastic."
The
students are from the Festus R-6 School District.
Their principal, Mrs. Karen Biehle, is anxious to
pursue helping the students start a bridge club or
have classes installed in the R-6 Schools. Chris
Shaw, Education Chair for District 8, will assist
her in writing a grant proposal for supplies and equipment
to get started.
Kudos
to Luke Lucas
who spearheaded the effort!
Additionally,
Chris Shaw, Unit 223 ran a live-in Youth Bridge Camp
at Lake Williamson for 20 students. They met
twice a day for lectures and play. Mike Huston
from Joplin, MO and local bridge players (from St.
Louis, Illinois, and Iowa) taught and mentored the
students at the tables.
